Sp@m seems to embrace many forms these days. Have you ever heard of “widget sp@m“?
Well, recently I have become a member at MyBlogLog community. I have met new people, discovered some great websites that I did not know about, joined communities, traffic increased, etc. So far so good…
The dispointement however started shortly after I have put the MyBlogLog “recent readers” widget on my blog. Even if the traffic was increasing even more, I saw that I started to have visitors that were spending less than 10 seconds on my blog… so I started to wonder what might have been the cause of that. Looking further at my stats, realized that plenty of exit clicks were pointed towards that widget. So why would people come to my site, stay for less than 10 seconds just to click on somebody’s avatar?
The reason for this is simple. Most of the blog owners (especially ones that don’t receive tons of traffic dailly) are curious to see who visited their website, so almost instinctively they go to their visitors blog as well. The downpart is that this curiosity can be speculated and it can become a cheap method of increasing traffic to your site.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t have nothing against it if they actually read my blog, but I suspect that this type of visitors visit one site after another navigating just through that widget.
(I think that everybody can agree with me that a blogger should look for quality traffic that will eventually convert to returning visitors not just spikes that will only result in lower CTR and conversions.)
The irony is that I was actually convinced to join this community because of that widget, and now I removed it because I don’t like this kind of “spammy traffic”. But I still am and I will still be a member of the MBL.
I need to add that after having removed that widget from my blog, I have noticed that the “10 seconds” visits are almost gone, even though the traffic has been basically the same.
It is really a shame, since the idea was original and interesting; another good thing about to be “ruined” by sp@m…
The worst part is that I have absolutely no idea how this kind of sp@mming can be controlled. In fact I am not even 100% sure that it can be called sp@m.
I hope that the guys that are administrating the mbl community will find a way to resolve this, or concentrate on better ways of communication between contacts and members of different communities. At least there, you could have a lot more control over things.
Before publishing this post, I have searched the web to see if I am the only one that thinks this way (in other words, to make sure that I wasn’t paranoid, especially since I knew a lot of well known bloggers which I respect a lot, (like Yaro Starak, for example,) were very happy with it.
Surprisingly or not, there were some other people that have the similar issues with this. Take a look at what Michael Arrington had to say about it.
Again, I really like MyBlogLog, because it is a place where you can make contacts easier, a good start for a beginner to have his blog noticed, and to be honest I even like the idea of seeing my picture on the websites that I visit, but at least for now you won’t see your picture on my blog… really sorry about that.
I would be happy to know what you think about this; is it really important for you to see your picture on other people’s blogs? Did you notice a similar trend with your blog or is it just me?

Thanks for the feedback!
I agree that it is nice to see smiling faces on your blog (and in some cases, some other parts of the body:) ).
What I don’t like is the way this idea is being speculated. But maybe you are right… I shouldn’t care so much.
But Mike’s TechCrunch also having the “recent readers”. Well, I find it’s pretty handy for me to check who visited my site… Normally I click on those faces shown on my blog and visit thier blog, most of them will do a return to visit my blog. Well, I know this is not genuine traffic, but beginer like us, ha, some excitement get some hits and some contacts…
Hehehe yes I think you should just keep doing what you’re doing…I have no doubts that you’re helping a lot of people with your posts…and that’s all it matters:)
Have a good weekend:)

Is MyBlogLog a source of quality traffic or not?…
I don’t know why but I’ve never thought about MyBlogLog traffic from this point of view. One thing I like about MyBlogLog is it’s fairly easy to connect with people with similar interests. I only add internet marketing type contacts and communitie…

Hi,
There are probably as many types of readers at MyBlogLog as there are types of people. When I join a community, I bookmark the site in a firefox folder. I don’t join a community if I am not going to keep up with the site. I visit the sites I have bookmarked at least every couple of days to see what new has been posted. Some of the sites do not post that often - but at least I see.
I like to see my picture on the widget on the blog - I don’t really know why - but I do. Frankly, I consider myself to be good traffic.
Best wishes,
Jean
Thanks for the feedback everybody!
@Ketyung - well Michael has a co-branded community now
I can understand that excitement, and not necessarily all the traffic coming from MyBlogLog is not “genuine”. I have also made some contacts there that are visiting this blog on frequent basis.
If you want to see who has visited your site lately, you can do it directly at your profile and community page at MyBlogLog without having the widget installed.
@Maria -I am really glad you think this way. Knowing that my articles help people, motivate me to post more often. Thanks for the kind words!
@Jean - “There are probably as many types of readers at MyBlogLog as there are types of people” - with this line you said it all!
I just wish that everybody would do things the “normal’ way and don’t try to take cheap shortcuts…
The fact that you had took the time to read what I have written, and even post a comment is proof enough that you are “good traffic” and I thank you for that!
I have gained a huge amount of subscribers from MyBlogLog, but you can’t just expect to stick the widget on your sidebar and just visit sites to gain repeat traffic.
You need to subscribe to the blogs that interest you in your feed reader, become part of their community, link through to their interesting posts and become less insular.
Then again I might be wrong, my blog has grown from zero to 300+ subscribers and Alexa (which really means nothing) is averaging below 20K for the week.
Hi Andy,
You are not wrong at all. Sticking a widget on your sidebar will not help you too much. It will probably just add a little “social” touch to your blog.
Btw, congratulations on your progress!
I got a little MBL widget spam in the beginning but so far, I’ve liked seeing the visitors and generally try to check out who a reader is. That’s how I came to this site! I think it’s a good way to find new blogs.
Maybe it’s because my traffic isn’t all that high but I really haven’t gotten much MBL widget spam.
Yeah surely mybloglog is a great way to get links as well as traffic to your website/blog. With this we also able to know about the biggest bloggers of our niche
